The Route

Departure and finish in the world famous ‘Greve in Chianti’. One of the most fabulous medieval towns in Tuscany, also know as the gate to Chianti. Discover the world famous Strade Bianchi with some sectors of the world tour race but most of all immersion in all the good things Tuscany has to offer. Picturesque towns oozing history and culture, endless gravel roads, wine, great food and sun. What more can you ask for?
Itinerary:
day 1: Greve in Chianti - Siena: 91km - 2000m
day 2: Siena - Pienza: 109km - 2000m
day 3: Pienza - Pontignano: 102km - 1850m
day 4: Pontignano - Greve in Chianti: 71km - 1750m
People that enjoy riding perfect crisp rolling gravel during the day and enjoy the brilliant Italian kitchen and drinks afterwards.
Famous for it’s hilltop towns, Chianti wine, cypress trees, great food and Italian style, Tuscany is also home to the strade bianche and some of the best gravel in Europe.
Starting just outside Florence, you’ll ride through the best of Tuscany following many of the white gravel routes made famous by the Eroica and the annual Strade Bianche professional race.
Discover the magical medieval city Siena and ride through Montalcino, home of the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine. Ride through the classic Chianti and Vernaccia vineyards and the Crete Senesi with its quintessential Tuscan landscapes of rolling hills and lines of cypress trees leading to hilltop.

The Ancient Certosa di Pontignano (Pontignano Charterhouse), a timeless location a few kilometres from Siena, is set on a hill looking over the city.
The Certosa di Pontignano, the official congress centre for the University of Siena and the ideal location for stays in Tuscany, dates back to 1343 and presents the traditional appearance of Carthusian monasteries.
In 1703, the Chapel of Saint Agnes, recognised the world over as a miniature Sistine chapel in the Siena area, was built inside the Certosa.

It is possible to book this trip without a guide, lunch and dinner. 1200,00€ per person depending on hotel prices. If you would like to go off season (November/February/March/ .. we can provide more exclusive accommodations at cheaper prices, all custom)
We arrange all accommodations and a route with roadbook in detail with recommendations for lunch, dinner, highlights, etc..

A mild Mediterranean climate with spring and late summer as absolute highlights for cycling. Summers can be very hot, making cycling unpleasant. We prefer to go to the mecca of gravel tbetween late March - early June and September/October.
Expect pleasant temperatures, but a shower is never out of the question.

Tires: Tubeless is the way to go. We advice to ride around 40mm or wider.

Gearing: A normal gravel setup works fine

You don't need a bag on your bike. We do recommend a small saddle bag with a spare tire. If you do not have a bike jersey with pockets, you can provide a small frame or handle bar bag for your snacks.

The surface are mostly smooth rolling double tracks.
There are some bumpy sections and some short steep climbs and descents.
If you ridden a gravel bike of mountainbike occasionally before, you’ll be fine. And if not, You have time to get used to it.
